Roberto di Matteo rumored to be Aston Villa manager
Roberto di Matteo is seen as the favourite next Aston Villa manager according to bookmakers.
The Italian has struggled to make an impact at any club since leaving Chelsea in 2012. Despite spending only a short period with the blues,Di Matteo won the Champions League before leaving the club a few months later. In his managerial career, the Italian has been in charge of teams like Schalke, West Brom, and MK Dons. He is currently out of work after having left German outfit Schalke in the summer of 2015. Di Matteo has reportedly been looking at a potential return to English football without a proper avenue still not opening yet.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, are on the lookout for a new manager ahead of some troubled times. The next Villa manager will certainly have a hard job on his hands. Apart from having to resurrect the club from the Championship back into the Premier League, he also has to do so on a limited budget. The club has already been put on sale by owner Randy Lerner, who is not ready to invest any more of his own money into the club. However, the valuation of £ 200 million by Lerner will put off any interested parties as the club are now playing in the second division of English football.
Despite all such difficulties, there is certainly some interest amongst managers to take over at Villa, who are seen as one of the top clubs in England. Initially, Di Matteo was seen as 10/1 favourite to take over at Villa. However, recent movements have changed the odds to 1/3, thus making him as one of the favourites to take over. Villa have been relegated to the second division for the first time in almost 3 decades and they have been joined by Newcastle and Norwich.
