Messi gives Argentina boss selection problem

Messi is back playing for Argentina after missing their first four World Cup qualifiers because of injury. This gives Argentina’s boss some selection issues since he will have to choose which ones of Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero to leave out of the team.

The return of Lionel Messi to the Argentinian team is expected to boost the team spirit after a difficult start to the qualifying campaign. Indeed, Argentina has only picked five points from the first four games and will expect that the return of their talismanic player will help the team play better.

The Argentina boss, Gerardo Martino, believes that Lionel Messi will calm down the other players and help them to improve their game. In the previous matches, Martino has favored a four man attack with Higuain, Aguero, Messi and Di Maria. It is very likely that he will resort to the same formation with the return of Messi.

Martino told media that his strikers are among the best in the world and that they will need to understand that there are only two places available up front. Whoever is left out will need to understand and be ready to play for the team whenever he is needed.

Messi has made 105 appearances so far for the Argentina national team and has scored 49 goals during the process. He is generally touted as being the best player since Maradona to play for the Argentina national team. Some pundits even believe that Messi has overtaken Maradona as being the best player ever to play for Argentina.

Argentina faces Chile in their next game and is currently 6th in the table out of the qualifying places for the next World Cup. They are seven points behind the surprising leaders Ecuador and 2 points behind their fierce rival, Brazil.
