GUARDIOLA DEFENDS GERMAN TEAM
Pep Guardiola has defended his team selection for the weekend’s match against Augsburg after his team lost their unbeaten run in a long time. Bayern Munich came into the encounter after having not won the last two matches.
Yet, they have an imperious record of being unbeaten in 54 matches in the league. Due to the midweek Champions League quarter-final match against Manchester United in mind, Guardiola chose to rest a number of key players like Philipp Lahm, Arjen Robben, and Franck Ribery for this match. It ultimately proved to be the undoing for the German champions, as they lost the proud unbeaten record.
Guardiola, though, said that he is not worried about losing the record because he is aware that the Bundesliga is over after his team managed to capture the Championship with seven matches remaining. They now focus their attention on winning the remaining two trophies available to them. They have drawn the first leg 1-1 against Manchester United and they will be able to qualify even if the second leg finishes as a 0-0 draw. Mölders scored the only goal of the game in the 31st minute to give Augsburg the proud record of having ended Bayern’s unbeaten run.
Bayern’s next match in the league will see them come up against archrivals Borussia Dortmund.
"If this had been important, then Philipp (Lahm), Franck (Ribery) and Arjen (Robben) would all have been here. The Bundesliga is over - that's in Bayern's museum already and is staying there. We tried to win and fought hard, but you can't always win in football and we've got to accept that. Now we've got to prepare for our final against Manchester United as soon as possible. You can always lose to Augsburg - that's fair enough,” said the former Barcelona manager, who has been revolutionising Bayern this season.
