BRAZIL START W/CUP QUEST AGAINST SERBIA
Brazil will start their quest to win a first World Cup title in two decades when they take on Serbia in Group G. The five-time world champions would be hoping to extend their record to six World Cup wins when hostilities begin at the World Cup 2022 tournament on Qatari soil.
The Brazilians qualified for the World Cup 2022 tournament in Qatar as the first team in the South American qualifiers. They still have an extra game to play against arch rivals Argentina, but they have already been crowned winners of the South American qualifiers. Brazil have a six-point lead over Argentina ahead of the game which should take place later this year. It was initially scheduled for September 2021 and they had played a few minutes before it was disrupted by Brazilian authorities and subsequently postponed.
Apart from Brazil and Argentina, two-time winners Uruguay will also be in Qatar from the South American section alongside a young Ecuador team. South America could still have five representatives just like the last World Cup tournament in Russia if Peru manage to qualify through the inter-confederation playoffs.
The Brazilians are in a relatively tricky group alongside Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon. Serbia qualified for the World Cup 2022 tournament in Qatar by piping immediate past European champions Portugal to top spot in their group as far as the European section for the tournament is concerned. Portugal had to qualify for the tournament by beating Turkey and North Macedonia in the playoffs. For Switzerland, they were a major reason why five-time winners Italy would be missing a second successive World Cup tournament after they piped them to top spot in their group only for the Italians to lose to lowly North Macedonia in the playoffs. Five-time Cameroon controversially saw off Algeria in the playoffs to book their place in Qatar 2022.
